Publisher's description

This review applies to version 3.0. The latest version of this software will soon be reviewed by our informers.

MonoDevelop is an IDE primarily designed for C# and other .NET languages. MonoDevelop enables developers to quickly write desktop and ASP.NET Web applications on Linux, Windows and Mac OSX. MonoDevelop makes it easy for developers to port .NET applications created with Visual Studio to Linux and to maintain a single code base for all platforms.

What's new in version 3.0

The major focus of MonoDevelop 3.0 is a new C# code completion engine, which provides more accurate and reliable code completion and navigation, semantic highlighting for C# files, and a reliable on-the-fly code formatter.

-New C# Completion Engine

This release of MonoDevelop features a new resolver and code completion engine for C# based on Mono's C# Compiler as a Service. This means that improvements that are done to Mono's C# compiler, such as new features added to the language or fixes done to it, now flow naturally into MonoDevelop. The compiler as a service is encapsulated in the easy-to-use NRefactory 5 library, which both MonoDevelop and SharpDevelop consume.

This work has allowed us to substantially improve many existing features, and to introduce new ones, and it provides a solid foundation for future changes.

-C# Code Completion

The reliability and accuracy of the C# code completion has been improved substantially. In particular, code completion is now more robust in its handling of incomplete code, and better at providing correctly contextual suggestions. Type inference in code completion is much more reliable, which fixes cases where MonoDevelop failed to provide code completion for lambdas and LINQ expressions.

Many known issues in C# code completion have been fixed, and are now covered by a large automated test suite.

-The Find References navigation command now uses the new C# resolver. It is more accurate and many times faster, particularly for members. This also makes the Rename refactoring command much faster.

Many new refactorings and code transformation actions are available from the context menu in the source editor.
However, there are many other new features and improvements, including a revamped Assembly Browser, preliminary support for Portable Library Projects, better handling of large projects, and virtual indenting in the source editor.
